Artist Model & Inspiration

Artist Model - Ray Harryhouse n
An American visual effects creator, writer and producer. He created a brand of stop-motion model animation known as 'Dynamation.'

I really like how his animations served as the "special effects" of his time. He also mastered movement and smoothness in his animations very well. I really like the aesthetic and colours he used (natural as to be believable.) Harruhousen also used realistic miniture models. Although my models won't be realistic as such they will be miniature and create very life like movements as to fool you that they are real.

Fantastic Mr Fox by Wes Anderson.
Artist Model - Wes Anderson
This animation consists mainly of stop motion. I really like the lighting and the way that the characters are animated in this. It's very smooth and life like. The fox's having real hair really gives them a more life like feel (as opposed to just using clay to make them.) The cinematography in this film is really amazing as it doesn't let the fact that it's a stop motion hold it back from getting all angles possible. I will definitely try to emulate angles and lighting used in this film in my own stop motion.

Project Three, Lesson One

Class Reflection:
Today in class we learnt how to code mousePressed and mouseX mouseY. I changed a few of the colours and I think I understand it a little. I'm not sure if we have to add loops to our code but I think it will start to get very confusing when that happens. I will try really hard to understand the code as I write it, so I can make the interaction exactly how I vision it.

INSPIRATION

http://openprocessing.org/sketch/68756
I really like this coding as it paints a picture with code, the background acting as the canvas.
It also gave a lot of different options in interactions:

press
z = stop
x = go
r = change colours
t = restart (black)
y = restart (white)
left-click mouse = points go to where mouse clicked

I really love photo manipulation and colour editing on photoshop (it's one of my hobbies) creating very fantasy and surreal images. So this is one of the reasons why this type of image appeals to me. With the black background it almost has a "space" type of feel to it. It creates different sized circles at the ends that really adds to the "space" feeling. I like how you can change the colours and by clicking the mouse you can control where the lines go to. It must have 'random' code in it as the lines don't touch the destination in an ordered time or place. The colours and circles sizes also appear to be constrained random variables.

What I really like about this code is as the lines follow your mouse around the begin to fade out, preventing from a big build up on the screen. The last inspiration I looked at however, has got me thinking about maybe creating a type of canvas through my coding as this is something that really interests me.

"Click the mouse to start the dot, move the mouse around, click again to stop the dot, and press any key to clear. "
I think this coding is visually very nice, especially the way it layers and fades. It would have been more effective if the dot that began was smaller and there were possibly more translucent colours involved. I also think that the background could have been larger and maybe even a different colour. More random controlled random variables could have been used to make this coding more visually appealing.

I choose this as inspiration to research in as this code also creates a very interesting, visual "canvas" type effect. The lines follow the mouse around, allowing the user to create curves using straight lines which is very interesting. I think the colours don't go together very well. I would like to produce something with a very good colour palette to really make the coding a piece of art.

This coding is NOT AN INSPIRATION. This is just an example of a code I really don't like. The design doesn't do much interactive (just follows the mouse around from the top left point.) The circles and flashing colours are very hard on the users eyes and this isn't very pleasant at all. I do not want my design to induce seizures. I will use complementing colours and not make my design heart other peoples eyes.

Development - Process

An abstract shape which I tried creating to depict the leaf.

Creating structure and noise

Playing with colours that claimed to be "earthy tones" on colourlovers.com when they really did not go with the greens of the leaves.

Trying different sizes to create more noise.

A way too red, bold outline around the "leaf" shapes.

A nicer green around the 'leaf' shapes which help support the idea of these circle shapes representing an abstract leaf form.

Stop Motion I made

The Clip - A Virtual Reality from Ally Baldwin on Vimeo.

This is a stop motion I made for a project in dsdn101. I may use this style of claymation again in my assignment two for photographics :) I feel pretty confident in knowing how to do it and using the software.

I'm also quite into photo manipulation.
Here are some works I have done in the past using stock images (credited on my Deviant Art account.)

Examples of Binocular Designs

These binoculars have a very large, interesting shape.

Very vintage using gold colours. Short though, looks as if it's made of metal. I like the aesthetic.

Very steampunk but I think it looks awesome. Although not functional for my design.

I love how leather is used here. Would help for the binoculars to be much stronger and would be much more user friendly to touch. I also like how wood is used here, very classical.

Not a great aesthetic but very functional.
This design is very steampunk.

I like the middle used and how the binoculars are held together.

Very unique, steampunk design. This reminds me of a small magnifying glass with a larger one over top so it kind of reminds me of what my design may be like. Also I like the use of wood. Seems much to large and daunting to use though.

More like goggles and less like binoculars but I really like the classical, vintage appearance here. It takes on obvious characteristics of steampunk design. Perhaps I could use a chain like this in my own design. Although not appropriate for my design maybe, I like the ornament used here.

Another great design. I like the middle part which is holding the two lenses together.

These are all great examples of Binocular designs. I really need to think about how I will attach the middle piece. It may need to be made so that it can be adjusted for each individual and their face shape (width of their eyes.)

Creative Coding. Blog Post One.

Class Reflection

We write out instructions to describe an object and then got people in our group to try and follow these instructions alone, without knowing what the object is and draw it. I chose the chap stick in my pocket. The first person who tried to draw this took the instructions too literally such as "each side of the tube has a flat circle." However the other two who drew it did it well but maybe they realised what the object was which helped them. Some of the people in my group wrote instructions for a grid and an x/y axis. I found these instructions a little confusing as they were written very quickly and weren't explained very well. Also as I was only drawing lines and unsure of that the object was, I didn't know if I was connecting them properly or not. I realise now that the instructions need to be more precise and go through step by step.

This code is effective because of the build up of colours and shapes. The thin lined shapes slowly build up with more emphasis in different corners, creating a good composition. The idea is simple but because of the many complex shapes building up, it becomes to look like a very complicated technical drawing.

http://openprocessing.org/sketch/65382
I love this one for many reasons. Firstly, the colours black and white are very simple but extremely effective in this idea. The negative space helps to make the black stand out. The black looks like ink, it comes in at a fast pace but then slowly eases off and becomes faded as the opacity is lowered at the tips. The lines move very smoothly and jagged farthing this illusion of ink and also creating a creepy atmosphere. The black creates very interesting, branch looking shapes. The black is more deep in the centre as it gradually branches off and fades out.
Again, the colours are simple and help the user to understand that the splashes are ink. I like how this design is interactive. As you click the ink splashes and drips down. I feel like the ink splashes are too sharp though and the ink that drips down is all identical. This would be more effective if the ink splashes looked more natural and the drips were different shapes, sizes and ran down at different paces. Another thing I like about this design though is when you click the right mouse button the screen clears itself again, ready to be clicked on again. Also how the older ink splashes fade out into the background, allowing a layering effect to be built up.

Here is a picture I made on this code, this is a screen shot.
The circle follows the mouse in this code. What I liked about this idea was how the slower you moved the mouse, the more closer together the circles are. The faster - the further spaced. This created some really intense patters as shown above. I think this code could be made a lot more interesting with more colours and a different shape. Or possibly a variety of different shapes.

Inspiration images&words

Three Inspirational Images

I chose these three images as my inspiration as they have a "spiky" effect which is unique for a flower, creating an abstract, unnatural look. The effect of the petals protruding from the cluster with cross over leaves and spikes created an interesting effect which I'd like to incorporate into my 3D design.These three photographs will become the beginning of my inspiration for this project. From these images I have chosen three words inspired by them.

Three words to describe the precedent objects and define the direction of my project:
Noun:         Cluster
Adjective:   Spiky
Verb:          Protrude

Note: Images or words may change during the progress of this project.
